Given the significant advantages of biological methods in substantially reducing waste generation and production costs, these approaches have increasingly replaced many conventional chemical production methods. Today, numerous units across the country are active in the field of industrial biotechnology, and efforts are also underway to establish new facilities. In this context, the Industrial Biotechnology Research Group was founded in 2001 by a group of faculty members from the Department of Chemical Engineering at Isfahan University of Technology.

The research activities of this group focus on the biological production of a wide range of industrial materials, including biogas, biohydrogen, superabsorbents, ethanol, acetone, butanol, glutamic acid, and precursor materials for renewable polymeric compounds. The group is also engaged in the production of food industry products such as yeast, vinegar, glucose and fructose syrups, as well as enzymes including glucoamylase and alpha-amylase.

Other major activities of the group include troubleshooting and optimizing existing biological units, evaluating the feasibility of biological production of other industrial compounds, assessing various technologies for biological production, providing consulting services to investors, facilitating technology transfer, proposing solutions for the treatment of industrial wastewater, and designing and constructing semi-industrial pilot plants.
